Rose Brennan born 1 January 1931

Rose Brennan (born 1 January 1931) is an Irish singer. She is best known for a long spell with the Joe Loss orchestra in the 1950s and 1960s.

Rose Brennan was born in Cabra West, a suburb of Dublin, Ireland. At age sixteen she started singing with the Neil Kearns Orchestra at Dublin's Olympic Ballroom, Johnny Devlin's De Luxe Orchestra at the Crystal Ballroom, and the Pavilion (popularly known as "The Hangar") in Salthill, County Galway. Roy Fox booked her in 1949 for his stage show at the Theatre Royal in Dublin. When Fox moved on, Rose joined the Billy Watson Band at Clery's Ballroom. She was also a regular voice on Radio Éireann's Happy Days and Beginners Please series.

In April 1951, Elizabeth Batey, a vocalist with Joe Loss, fell and broke her jaw. Joe was badly in need of a replacement and remembered hearing Rose Brennan on radio during a visit to Ireland. Within days he had located her and, before a week was out, she was in Manchester rehearsing with the band. She stayed with Loss for fifteen years, before giving up show-business in the mid-1960s.

In 1954, she was awarded third place by the New Musical Express for the best recording of the year; this was her cover of Leo Maguire's "The Whistling Gypsy". Her co-vocalists with the orchestra from 1955 were Ross MacManus (father of Elvis Costello) and Larry Gretton. She wrote many of the songs she recorded under the name Marella, and co-wrote songs with John Harris.

It was not until 1961, now on the Philips label, that she reached the UK Singles Chart when "Tall Dark Stranger" made it to No. 31. One of her next recordings included a number she wrote herself, "My Wedding Day". Her own wedding day was 7 May 1956 when she married George Hirst, son of a Yorkshire businessman, at Wakefield Registry Office.

She sang until 1966 with the Joe Loss Orchestra for weekly programs on the BBC and nightly at the Hammersmith Palais. She gave up show business and retired to run a public house, the Norland Arms in West London, with her husband John Lamb, an ex-policeman.

By 2010 Rose was in her 80’s and still singing every Thursday lunchtime in South West London at a pensioners club.

Here's a clip filmed from the television of Ross McManus (father of Elvis Costello) with a lively energetic version of 'If I Had a Hammer' followed by Rose Brennan with a dynamic rendition of 'No Regrets ' onstage at the Royal Variety Performance of 1963. Both Rose and Ross were resident singers with the Joe Loss Orchestra during the 1950s and early 1960s. This is the Royal Variety Show that also featured The Beatles. This rare clip was filmed from the television.

A vastly underrated singer, Dublin-born Rose Brennan might perhaps have become a major star had she gone solo, rather than remaining an ensemble band singer with Joe Loss & his Orchestra. After recording prolifically with Loss during the early 50s, she cut a handful of mainstream Pop records, enjoying a UK hit in 1961 with the self-penned 'Tall Dark Stranger', a song which sounded as though it might have come from the soundtrack of a John Ford western.
Rose quit the Joe Loss Orchestra in the mid-60s, thus terminating a singing career which seems annoyingly 'incomplete'.

This set runs the gamut of her recording career, from her earliest 78s with Joe Loss in 1952; and as far as we know, it is the very first dedicated Rose Brennan compilation. Many of these sides are taken from original 78rpm and 45rpm releases, and have never previously been available in the digital format. (Jasmine notes)

  4. Hell DD, Thanks for the extra album, apparently Rose is only singing on 2 tracks, which are : "Wishing Ring" & "Tulips & Heather". The other tracks with RB in the title are in fact Elizabeth Batey.(ref: Brian Rust & Joe Loss discographies). I thought you might like to know so you can get your artists right in your database. Cheers Bob
