Marion Mann (9 September 1914 - 1966) was a singer with
Bob Crosby’s Orchestra and Bob Cats from 1938 – 1941.
As you well may know I usually have a comprehensive biography
of my birthday celebrities but Marion Mann has been a labour of love. I have
spent hours combing the web for any information and all I got is what you see
below.
Marion Mann was was born Marion Bateson in Columbus, OH,
United States 9 September 1914.
Before all these breaks, Marion had one that wasn't at
all lucky. An auto accident left her with a fractured pelvis, broken collar
bone, and skull puncture, nearly ending her career. But she didn't let it, and
after leaving Crosby for Breakfast Club she learned to cook and tell riddles.
She was with the Breakfast Club at WMAQ for NBC from1942
to 1947. During 1945 she recorded some
Musicraft sides with Jose Bethancourt and his Orchestra. And that’s about it
regarding Marion Mann.
Any other information about this under-appreciated singer would be much appreciated.
On starting my research about Marion Mann, I never realised how difficult it would be to find any information about this big band singer….practically zilch!. Although only with Crosby for a few years, she still recorded many sides, in fact enough to warrant her own album. I managed to gather a few mp3’s from YouTube and archive.org to fill a CDR. Hopefully these will highlight Marions recordings. Please note most are from 78’s so sound quality will vary.
ReplyDeleteI have another three mp3s two of which are her 1945 Musicraft recordings with Jose Bethancourt which I’ll send via email if requested.

ReplyDeleteThanks Jake and a nod to Don.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for posting this appreciation of Marion. I'm curious though about the source of her death date? Were you able to locate an obituary? Best to you...... David Fletcher, Richmond VA
ReplyDeleteHi David, Alas all my jottings taken from the web about Marion are gone. I am sorry not to have named the source of her death, but I vaguely remember that it was from a comment on an article regarding Bob Crosby. Unfortunately Google doesn't access blog comments and I just haven't got the spare time to search all over again.
ReplyDeleteIf it is wrong then I hope some kind person will correct me. Regards, Bob

ReplyDeleteHi, my name is Eric. I´m reading with some interest your post about Marion Mann. I was searching data about her but internet is pretty empty about that. I´m listening to her voice in the Bob Crosby records since 1997 when i was 16 at that time. It brings me some good memories...
ReplyDeleteCould you send me by mail the three songs recorded in 1945? My e-mail is christyjazz45@yahoo.com
Thank you for this good job keeping the memory of this great singer.
