Julie Rogers (born Julie Rolls, 6 April 1943, Bermondsey,
London) is an English pop singer. She is best known for her multi-million
selling song, "The Wedding".
Rogers, the youngest of five children, had piano lessons and
started her career after leaving Kingsbury High School. She worked as a dancer
in Spain, a secretary in England, and a stewardess on a Union-Castle Line ship,
before singing with the Teddy Foster orchestra, with whom she toured the UK and
America. A&R man Johnny Franz signed her to a recording contract with
Philips Records in 1964, and released her debut single, "It's Magic".
The song was originally a hit for Doris Day in 1948.
...
Her 1964 hit "The Wedding" went to #3 in the UK Singles Chart, #1 in Australia and #10 in the US, in addition to topping the US Adult Contemporary chart. In 1961 "The Wedding" had been successful for Anita Bryant and Malcolm Vaughan, but Rogers' recording outsold them both. At the time of the release of "The Wedding", Rogers told the NME that she wanted to become an international artist. "The Wedding" was estimated by 1972 to have sold over seven million copies.
She had further UK hits with "Like a Child" (UK
#20, US #67) and "Hawaiian Wedding Song" (UK #31), both in 1965.
Julie appeared for a staggering eleven times at the 'Talk of
The Town' in London, not to mention many times at the Savoy Hotel, which used
to have cabaret. She also had a record breaking three-week season at 'The Green
Room' and also the 'Pizza On The Park'. Twenty four tours of Australia
including concerts and television. Julie has also presented her own TV Specials
in Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Portugal, Holland & Spain.
In 1968, she married Teddy Foster, and they remained a
couple until Foster's death in 1984 from renal failure. In 1987, she married
show business agent, Michael Black, the brother of lyricist Don Black. Michael
Black has since acted as her manager.
She also recorded a demo of "You Only Live Twice",
which appeared on the 1992 limited edition version of the album, The Best of
Bond...James Bond. Nancy Sinatra's version of the song was the one used in the
film of the same name.
In 1969, Julie switched to the Ember label and issued
several singles including Almost close to you, which she had performed at the
Knokke Cup festival in Belgium. Julie’s 1976 release, My name is Julie, on the
Pye label, is a noteworthy album, and includes Unchained melody, Tears on my
pillow, When I dream and The entertainer – the latter penned by Julie herself.
Julie appeared in Hong Kong in May 1998 and then at the
Dusit Thani Hotel, Bangkok, for two gala shows. Although she is also kept very
busy with corporate appearances in all the London hotels and prestige venues
around the world, Julie has also performed at many royal shows for the Duke of
Edinburgh, Princess Margaret, Diana Princess of Wales, The Duke of Kent and the
Duke of York, and has appeared several times at Buckingham Palace.
In addition to performing in the UK, Julie's talents are in
constant demand throughout the world. Australia, America, Canada, The Far East,
Middle East, Spain, Italy and the South of France are just some of the
countries that have enjoyed her talents. The 'Sporting Club' in Monte Carlo is
without doubt the most prestigious venue in the world and Julie has been
repeatedly booked there following such stars as Frank Sinatra, Shirley Bassey
and many other top celebrities. In fact she was presented with a silver cup for
the best show in 15 years!
Another part of her busy working life are regular
performances on some of the world's luxury liners. Known not only for her
superb singing, but also for her outstanding looks and personality, all of
which are matched by her stunning clothes, Julie continues to delight and
excite her audiences both at home and abroad, be it in the Concert Hall or the
Cabaret Room. Her most recent release is the 2014 album, Emotions. (Info
